Description

This lesson is about bears. You will teach the students the basic facts about bears.

This lesson is for fourth and fifth graders.

Procedure

First, you will copy the worksheet so that each student will have a copy.

Then, you will talk to the students about bears. Study Sheet on Bears

There are different types of bears. Brown Bears, Black Bears, Polar Bears, and Panda Bears are the ones you hear about the most. Brown Bears

Brown Bears are known as cuddly bears such as teddy bears that children have or people who like to collect teddy bears.



The male brown bears can weigh as much as 860 pounds, and the female brown bears can weigh as much as 455 pounds.

People are more familiar with the Grizzly Bear, which is a Brown Bear. Grizzly Bears are more aggressive. They mainly eat plants, berries, grass, and sometimes they will eat insects, fish, and small animals.

Black Bears

Black Bears can also come in different colors such as Brown Black bears and others even though they are Black Bears.

Black Bears weigh around 300 pounds or larger. They will eat just about anything. They especially like honey. Their claws help them to climb up and down trees. The mother bear will protect her young by helping them to climb up trees if she senses they are in danger.

Polar Bears

Polar Bears will go after seals. They will sit where a seal is and will go after them as soon as the seal appears.

The shape of the polar bears body, ears, and feet help them to be excellent swimmers.

The male bears weigh as much as 1300 pounds, and the females weigh around 600 pounds or smaller.

Male polar bears do not hibernate like other bears. They stay active the year round. The female pregnant polar bears do hibernate like the other bears.

Polar bears also live in extremely cold climates. They have to be able to survive in this type of climate.

Giant Panda Bears

Giant Panda Bears enjoy eating bamboo. That is their main diet. They have black and white markings.

Male Pandas can weigh between 190 to 275 pounds. The female panda is a little smaller.
