  • I attended Lugonia Elementary School during the WW II years. Three of its teachers have guided me all of my life: Ms. Lotspeach the fourth-grade teacher of arithmetic; Ms. Watkins the fifth-grade teacher of penmanship; and Mrs. L.A. Murray, the teacher for all seasons.

I remember, telling fellow student Jolene, on the day we finished whole number in the fourth grade: "That's it. No more arithmetic. The next day, we walked into class to see two chalk boards filled with fractions. I can still hear her voice saying how bright we were and that fractions were really easier to learn than whole numbers, because we already understood the concepts of addition, etc.

In the fifth grade, we learned how to write letters as though they were objects of art.

Mrs. Murray brought the whole world into her class room, a major project being our individual tree books, some of which pages were created from many sources.

When air raid alerts sounded, we marched across Orange Street to hide from German or Japanese bombers.

"Nostalgia" is a beautiful word. The times I recall were beautiful. They were a time of transition from childhood to the challenges of adulthood.

My best friend was Henry Lopez who in adult life died in a jet fighter accident.
