  • I am a proud parent of three children that attended Shelyn from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Can't say enough about the teaching staff. It is a great school-wonderful, competent teachers who not only taught well but with care. I always felt comfortable talking with the teachers about any issues I had. They were readily available for conferences. Some even offered tutoring before and after- school for my son who needed extra help. There were always some extra, fun activity that the teachers wanted to do for the children unique to their classroom-that the teachers paid for themselves.
The school also recognized the children that were more advanced than others-and offered extra work if the child and parents wanted. There is a GATE program offered based on teacher's recommendations and specific testing. There is also an Algebra course at this school offered for advanced students in sixth grade. By seventh, most of these kids take Geometry!
The school is in a largely asian community-so expectations and drive to do well are evident. High attendance rate and a lot of kids on honor roll and high honor roll. I believe the API score for this school is in the 800's.
School is modern and grounds are clean and safe. City police patrol the school perimeter constantly.
The textbooks are in great shape-especially the math and science books which seem new every year. There is even a modern computer lab that is part of the curriculum.
    Negatives:
PTSA did not have enough parent involvement but the few that were on the board worked very hard to plan special activities for the school (Family movie night, Magic Night, Father & Daughter Dance, etc...)
Traffic around school can get really crazy at drop off and pick up. Very stressful and some accidents. There are crossing guards present when kids are there but knowing where to park and when to get there are helpful.
Also if a student is struggling academically, he/she may get lost because of high standards present. Be in constant communication with the teacher and make sure to seek help where offered and early on.

I would highly recommend this school for primary education (K-6th)
