  • As I get older, and older, I realize how important Charles S. Ashley School was, in providing some building blocks of life, that I still use in my everyday life. I attended 2nd through 6th grade there, and even though it has been a little over 30 years since then, I remember some moments like they were yesterday. Mrs. Kulick was my 3rd grade teacher, and even though she was close to retirement at the time, it was obvious how much she cared about addressing each individual child's needs and talents.
My 6th grade teacher, Mr. Richard Medeiros, turned out to be one of the most important male role model in my life. He taught his classroom life lessons in addition to the usual studies. Both of my sons were fortunate enough to have him as a role model also. One had him for a teacher, and the other had him as a coach in the intramural sports program that he ran. I remember one time that he gave up a Saturday, to bring us on a field trip, to a Red Sox game. I don't really like baseball, but even then, I knew that most teachers look forward to the weekend without students, and here he was, happy to show us a truly good time. I wish more teachers were like him, because I don't think that some teachers realize just how much of an impression they leave on a child, good or bad, that will last through their adult lives.
