  • .Stoddard Elementary School used to be one of the finest schools in the Anaheim City School District. However, due to federal meddling and state-level incompetence, the entire District has declined. The overemphasis on discrete (separate) standards by the state has crippled the staff's ability to be creative with the children and show the skills in real context. The adults' fear of the administration and stress over the overwhelming task of trying to teach too many students with one "scripted" curriculum concept, discourages everyone. The atmosphere has gone from clear academic focus and consistent discipline to "plugging holes", avoiding trouble, and getting higher test scores for the sake of the numbers.
First, the joy went out of the teachers' eyes and then it went out of the students' eyes.
With the economic crisis, there is a "brain drain" of experienced teachers who are retiring andsupposedly helps the District save some money. But, along with bodies, goe the years of knowledge and caring and passion for the job. Dedicated, passionate, and empathetic teachers are discouraged and leaving, while the young (who need the role models) flounder and seem to not care. With the librarian in jeopardy of losing her job, who will guide the students and teachers to the best books for them? An awesome person who is so dedicated and deparately needed should not have to fear for her position. ALL schools need books and resources in a well-run library. Stoddard has the finest!
Good luck, Stoddard. Try to remember your mission, find joy,do signficant things, and love all during your days. I know I did. Stoddard is still a good school. Be not afraid to become part of the solution!
