  • While Oak Hill provided the opportunity for me to go to school in a safe environment, far away from the dangers that an inner-city school might have, the education I received there was less than satisfactory. Though not all, many teachers were hardly enthusiastic about their classes and often supplied "busy work" or showed movies. I entered college having not read a single book my senior year (aside from those I read outside class). I passed my junior chemistry class with an A+ average only because we seldom opened the book. Additionally, the school provided minimal assistance in obtaining scholarships for college. Many of my friends now say that their home high schools kept them constantly posted about scholarships available; that is not true of Oak Hill. Despite all this, Oak Hill does have a few fine educators. Interestingly enough, I am glad that I attended Oak Hill. Although I had to work much harder when I got to college, I was able to go to college for free because I went to Oak Hill. As it turns out, the relaxed nature of the school led to under-achievers in my graduating class; therefore, I was salutatorian and was given a full-tuition scholarship. At a school with a more intense academic workload, I may not have had a high enough GPA to receive such a scholarship. Will I send my own children to Oak Hill? Maybe or maybe not; much can change in the course of just a few years. Ultimately, I feel that while it definitely needs improvement, it isn't hopeless. I am entering my senior year of college and have a 3.9 GPA; I feel I am a testament to that.
