  • The academics, the teachers, and the counselors prepared me to know my career path and set my goals that would effect my life for the next 48 years. Graduation was a closing of one chapter that started a new beginning. The success was up to me. And, I say this with a smile!

  • Well I may not be alumni but Madison did its best to keep me in and educated. The staff there worked with me and found ways to get me school credit even when I hated my classes. I loved that school and can honestly say with all my heart I miss those days. I was unfortunately a drop out and therefore didn't graduate but everything I learned there will never be forgotten thanks to 2 very important teachers Mr. H and Jon.

  • I graduated in 1981. The school was a challenge then with racial issues. Still it was anything you wanted to make of it. I went the wrong way and did not take advantage of all the programs the school had to offer. I was more worried about were the next party was. Oh well, our best years are sometimes wasted on our youth.

  • This school is not terrible, but by no means a good school. There are some truelly terrible teachers, in whoms classes i learned absolutely nothing. But there are also some good teachers who i learned alot from and had a great relation ship with. As someone else said the administration was terrible, not so much what they did but the lack there of.

  • I love Madison High School with all my heart. Like so many others, my plans were to avoid attending Madison at all costs.
This was before I fell in love with the place. I believe that Madison is the most diverse school in the Pacific Northwest. We speak something like 37 languages here, and it's a dynamic I couldn't imagine living without. The mixture of cultures is something you can't witness anywhere else.

I adore every single staff member in their own way; the counselors, the secretaries, the math teachers. Every single person at that school has taught me something I will never forget.

    I. Love. My. School.

  • The last post is great. My son is going to Madison this year. We chose this school because of the small student body.
Every person we've met there so far has been kind and helpfull.
Also a new principal this year, that should help a lot.

  • I graduated from Madison High School in 2008, and I will say that in the first half of my Freshman year, I was reconsidering going to Grant. I went to Grant's orientation and everything, and I was impressed. But boy, I'm glad I didn't transfer. I feel so ashamed for thinking that Madison is a bad school. I didn't give it a chance when I was a Freshman.

The teachers are the most memorable teachers I have ever known- and even after I have become an alumni, I continue to visit every now and then. Summer vacation is almost over, and I do plan on visiting after Freshman orientation.

My teachers would tease me for being the shy guy, and I have to admit, it was kind of annoying at first. Looking back at it, I can't believe I used to be like that. If it wasn't for their caring for the wall flower students, I don't think I would be looking up and more encouraged to try new things than I was before. In particular- it was due to one of the teachers- my favorite, that I overcame most of my shyness.

The student body generally accepts one another. There are fights, but you must expect this from every high school, and they are rare here. I was a shy guy, and was never bullied. Everyone's a bit passive to each other, though. I guess so long as you don't do anything crazy, no one will get mad. Everyone's passiveness makes it somewhat difficult to make friends, but it's good practice until you have to deal with coworkers. I think it's a little sad how student turnout for extra curricular activities isn't as good as it should be. One time, I remember being at a club and out of the 15 people who signed up, I was the only one there. On the other side, I have been to club meetings where the classroom is just flooded with people.

Madison High School suffers from a shortage of classes due to the school budget, but I've noticed that the AP class selection has been gradually getting bigger. AP class teaching is still pretty new to teachers everywhere, so I commend them for doing their best to teach these recent college-level courses to non-college material students.

Trust me. Madison High School is in a LOT better position than other high schools. I won't say which, though.

  • This school gave a tremendous boost to a diverse student group. The bar for the academic level was set high, yet there was close attention was paid to individual student achievement.

  • Okay, whoever wrote that comment in august saying its the worst school ever is insane.
I've been to the nicest, richest school in oregon. and I'd never want my kids turning out like those kids. They are all stuck up and into themselves. creating clicks because they think they're better then each other.
Well madison isn't that way at all, madison is the most amazing, fun, welcoming, loving school i've ever been to. All the people are so much, and it's so much fun. Everyone gets along, and there aren't clicks.
We see eachother for who we are, not for what we have/what we do.
The teachers are amazing, and the classes are fine.
It gives more education then any private school you'd ever go to. maybe you didn't like it for other personal reasons. such as not accepting people to make friends or whatever. but get over that.
mhs, is the best school in portland.
    everything about it is great!

  • This school is probably one of the most visually appealing schools in Portland, as well as has some of the best, most creative teachers (Although, as a student, I admit, not all of them are perfect). My years at Madison up to now have been the best years of my life, and as the new copresident of M Community, I hope to recreate that for some perky new freshmen.

  • James Madison High School was the worst school i have ever gone to in my life. i would never send any of my kids there, when i'm older, even if you paid me 1 million dollars! The education was not the problem it was the administration and the students who attended! They didn't have any control over the students neither did they want to.
