  • This was my first experience in what was then called 'Junior High School', in the U.S. We had just returned from a tour of duty in Germany when i enrolled in 1968. I graduated in 1970. At that time, we called it "TE". School colours were garnet and grey - probably still are. If memory serves, i was in section 8-9 (8th grade) and 9-7 (9th grade). I reculturised to American life here. It was a bumpy ride making that adjustment.

One thing that stands out in my mind is the interest shown towards myself by an aging Algebra teacher, Mr. Dale. He had to be all of 75 years old then, and ran both the School Store and the Philatelic Club. I was actually a little intimidated by him, until one day when i went to the "store" to get a notebook. Mr. Dale had found out it was my Birthday, and presented me with a small collection of commemorative stamps from 1945, the Overrun Countries Issue. I was amazed that he even remembered that i collected such, and had kept me in mind as he assembled this collection! I still keep that birthday present in my collection to this day, four decades later! Thanks again, Mr. Dale.

My review? I think the teachers and supervisors at TE did everything in their power to help this confused and somewhat fearful army brat feel and be a part of their community. They set a high standard for me, a standard i held through both Conestoga and later on, Winter Park High School in Florida where we eventually moved our permanent residence. I still have my 1970 TE Yearbook, btw.

I don't know if this is so much a review as much as a fond remembrance. But for what it's worth, looking way back, i certainly give TE high marks! In retrospect, TE embodied an exceptionally high academic level, which provided a great segue into Conestoga High School.
