  • I was stunned by the level of ... I'd like to be polite, but I can't say it any other way.

Stunned by the level of STUPIDITY shown by the teachers in this school.

I was told by a math teacher - in front of 4 other teaches and the vice principle - that 3 minus 5 was algebra because the answer was negative and that my 8th grade son did not need to know how to do that without a calculator.

Not only did the other teachers agree, one of them told me "not to argue with her, because she's always right."

She proceeded to "prove" it to me by pulling up the 8th grade curriculum. She gave up looking after about 60 seconds, so I did a ctrl-f and checked it all. There were two references to algebra, both pre-algebra and both talking about solving equations with variables. Which is what algebra is.

There is no variable in the equation 3 minus 5.

Since she couldn't find any way to prove it to me, and stomped back into the conference room mad, she went off on me for daring to question her. One of the other teachers in the room said "I told you not to question her, she's smart, she always wins."

Instead of losing my temper and probably going to jail, I shut up.

My 8th grade son still does not know his multiplcation tables. He knows most of the 2x, a few of the 3x, and the only way he can do the others is because I showed him that it's possible to just add, for example, 4x4 == 4 4 4 4. He can't do multiplcation or division. He made a B in math.
