  • I am a former student of Jefferson Elementary. I must say I am thrilled that I got to attend this school. I have so many fond memories and experienced many things unique to the school that most other children did not that I feel I am very lucky.
One thing that really stands out in my mind is the Multicultural Fairs. We did Nigeria one year, and Belize the next. Learning about completley new and different cultures opened my eyes to the world that's out there and instilled in me a curiosity that stayed with me to this very day.
At Jefferson, I started learning how to play the Violin, and I can still play songs on the recorder that I learned from Mr. Bearnheart. (Please excuse my spelling; I'm not sure if his name is correctly spelled.) I loved the songs we sung, and can remember the school song and various others (of which I cannot remember the names, but I know the lyrics. 'Make a rainbow, make a rainbow, let the colors dance and shine, make a rainbow, till that rainbow, is a beautiful design, of red and white and black and yellow, tan and brown and tearful blue...' and 'Having new friends can be, like living in one great big family, a family of children, we start out by saying hello...')
I quite clearly remember Miss O'Hearn, my kindergarten teacher, and Mrs. Vang, my fourth and fifth grade teacher. Both were excellent and I loved them. Miss O' Hearn has that wonderful house in her classroom, and Mrs. Vang helped us make ecosystems for pillbugs and grasshoppers out of 2-litre soda bottles. I also remember my pen-pal from American Express because her name was Connie, just like Mrs. Vang's.
As for playground saftey, I am glad the slider (I have no idea what it is called, but it's perpendicular to the monkey bars) is still gone. It was when I was attending the school where a girl hurt herself on it and I'm happy there's no chance of that happening again.
Also, I loved the free Sundays we (those of us who finished the summer packet) recieved upon returning to school for the next year, the crossing-guards, and the pizza lunches with Ms. Anderson, the principal. Also Officer Van and the D.A.R.E. program was really fun. I still have the D.A.R.E. Video and watch it every so often. It's quite funny and it brings back a lot of good times and good people.
I do remember the parent-teacher visits and now I think that was a fantastic idea (though at the time I thought it felt really weird when my teacher came to visit with my parents). It got the parents involved with their children's life at school. (Though I'm not sure my dad needed the help getting involved. My dad was very active in both myself and my brother's Jefferson School education, being on the PTA and on friendly terms with our teachers and the principal. He even came in a few times to talk to my class about Belize when we were studying the country for the Multicultural Fair.)
All in all, I had really good experiences at Jefferson and I think it's a fantastic school. If I moved back to Green Bay and had kids, I would definitley have my kid(s) attend that school. (But that's quite some time away. I'm still in high school, after all.)
