School Description

Stepping Stones Montessori School was founded in 1983 by a group of dedicated parents and Montessori educators who insisted on the benefits of a sound, individualized, and continuous Montessori program. We are located near the intersection of College Avenue and Leonard St. NE, less than a mile from Michigan Street’s “Medical Hill”. The urban setting has provided accessibility and opportunities in keeping with our goals.

Our programs currently serve children from the age of 12 weeks to 13 years of age. Stepping Stones Montessori is a member of the American Montessori Society and the Michigan Montessori Society. Many of our faculty are active members of the North American Montessori Teacher’s Association (NAMTA).

Stepping Stones Montessori School Mission:

Engage each child’s passion for learning through the Montessori philosophy of education. Sustain an environment that enables each child to thrive as a life-long learner who is:

  • Self-directed and responsible

  • Self-confident and respectful

  • Self-aware and globally-conscious

  • Stepping Stones is an amazing school: strong academics, a truly diverse student body and dedicated teachers. We have two children at the school, and could not be happier with their education and development as individuals.

  • After attending and interviewing a number of preschools in the area we came across Stepping Stones and couldn't be happier! It is a great community of educators and families. You will never regret sending your child here!

  • My daughter attends Stepping Stones Montessori, and I am very pleased! The student population is very diverse, and parents are involved in the school and in the classroom. I am most pleased that when she has expressed interest in new activities, teachers have noticed and have found ways to accommodate her interest--even if it means doing work in a higher level classroom. The school offers two days of French instruction (in pre-school!), yoga one day per week and science on Fridays. The directresses are all Montessori based and definitely "follow the child!"

  • Top-notch educators provide stimulating Montessori based education for infants through 6th grade. Definitely worth checking into.
