  • If you are looking for a school that will provide your child with the academic foundation to succeed this school should be placed on the very bottom of your list. I attended this school and still find myself, years later, struggling to catch up to my peers. This school has a myriad of problems but for the purposes of this review I will focus on the most definable issue, logistics. The sheer size of this school renders them completely incapable of satisfy the needs of any student outside of the average, regardless of where that average falls. That being said, if a graduating class of 7 or 8 has 4 students that are consistently scoring below the national average then the entire class MUST be brought down to their level. These means if your child is an above average student he or she will never be challenged. Leaving such a student unchallenged for even a couple years, let alone 12 years, can lead to numerous problems including behavioral issues as well as continual reinforcement of apathy towards school work which inevitable leads to extremely underdeveloped study habits. These study habits could plague your child through the remainder of their life. Conversely, if a student is below average the same problem exists. A staff of 8 or less teachers can not take the time necessary to identify treatable learning disorders leaving such disorders undiagnosed can again lead to behavioral problems.

This school will attempt to attract you by pulling at your heart strings and claiming they offer a better education than their public or private counterparts. This is simply not true. I can assure their statics are at the level of the math skills they teach and would never hold up under the scrutiny of a statistician. The main difference between students that succeed and those that under-perform is parental involvement. If you are considering a private education then you can almost certainly consider yourself an involved parent that wants to help their child succeed. If their marketing has gone unchanged, they will provide charts that show SAT scores, college acceptance rates, etc comparing CLA to public schools. During this presentation ask that CLA filter the public stats to include only those children that have family support throughout their education. I think you will be surprised by the change.

Furthermore, this school cannot offer AP courses of any kind. Their math track lags far behind the average, maxing out at Pre-calc. This level of math is not high enough for a child to compete against students their own age especially in the more challenging fields of study, such as math, engineering, economics, science, and medicine. If the goal of paying for an education is to give your child an advantage in life your money would be better spent elsewhere.
