  • I attended STM from grades K-8.

Advantages: students are pushed to succeed more so than at a typical public school, there is a strong sense of community, and it is difficult to "fall between the cracks" in terms of academics or discipline because STM is a strict place.

Disadvantages: There's a lack of curriculum breadth and depth in comparison to a larger school. Also, if you aren't one of the students who can succeed in an environment of overachievers (e.g., you are an average student), you might feel a lack of confidence after a while because there are lots of strong students at STM who are constantly praised (in my opinion, average kids are not always given positive reinforcement at STM). The school's extremely conservative rules and culture might cause students to act out or possibly dissuade students developing a sense of individualism.
I must say, however, that STM students do very well in life; most attend well-respected colleges like PSU, Lehigh U, Georgetown, Cornell, etc. However, most tend to go to local or state colleges (Kutztown, PSU, DeSales) as opposed to "branching out" to other places. I'm a graduating senior from a top-tier college and I plan on going to law school. Many of my STM buddies have gone to solid colleges and have plans to attend medical, law, or business school. If you can make it at STM, you are prepared for most academic challenges. In many ways STM was more difficult than both high school and college because of its academic rigor.
