  • Our child attended Monticello day care through 1st Grade. We were initially happy with the program, but we became progressively dissatisfied with the curriculum, quality of instruction and management. Our problems started with the Kindergarten program -- the teachers seemed I'll equipped to help our child learn. She didn't seem engaged with the kids -- she just talked at them. At one point kids were learning to use Adobe Photoshop for one of their assignments, which I thought was cute but not particularly relevant to the life of a 5 year old. The curriculum seemed very mechanical -- rote memorization of state capitals, rather than experiential. My kid learned all the jingles, then forgot them. What benefit is it to "teach" this to a Kindergarten age child? We withdrew our child from the 1st grade. The homework seemed excessive, and again focused on rote memory and reproduction of information without awareness of the context. The management of this school is a whole other issue. It is very poor. On the surface the director seems credible, but we found any type of disagreement resulted in a personal attack (on us as parents). Beware if you do not agree with a decision made by the director -- and there were many we did not agree with. We had bad experiences with the director and had heard of others who had the same. One last concern was safety. The school did not seem to have adequate plans in place to deal with medical emergencies. Parents should check the record of this school for any serious injuries students have received on campus and make sure they are comfortable with the medical training of the staff and emergency procedures in place.

  • After reading the comment below, I felt strongly that an alternate viewpoint should be provided. We had been with Monticello since 2004 and currently have 3 kids enrolled there. I can't speak to the situation described below other than to say that if it all happended as described, it was not apparent to our family or to the other families that we know. We have been very happy with the school and find the environment to be very supportive. I believe there to be an appropriate emphasis on academics, but also time is allowed for other important activities which permit our children to be well-rounded (i.e. drama, music, P.E., foreign language, sports teams.) When we've had an issue with a teacher, I have felt our concerns were addressed appropriately and have been satisfied with the resolution. While no school can be perfect on every level, Monticello manages to do very well.
