School Description

Blue Oak Charter School is Chico's only charter school which offers first class public Waldorf education. The Blue Oak Charter School is committed to the education of the whole child through a comprehensive curriculum, active learning and integration of the Arts while acknowledging the uniqueness of each individual and supporting the full development of each child’s potential. Blue Oak Charter School’s curriculum and teaching method offer an inspirational and disciplined approach in which traditional teaching methods are bolstered by a teaching style emphasizing creative enthusiasm, and lessons that stress the significance of human achievements. This approach encourages critical thinking skills, intellectual curiosity, creative imagination, social responsibility, and initiative in the student. The school's ultimate goal is that young adults will emerge with both the self-confidence to impart direction and purpose to their lives and a lifelong love of learning.

Blue Oak Charter School is based on Waldorf and other methods that successfully fulfill the goal of educating the whole child. Intellectual development, social and emotional development, and fine/large motor skill development all contribute to a child’s healthy growth process. The effectiveness of the BOCS approach lies in the subject matter, which celebrates the diverse forms of human achievement across cultures, and by how this curriculum is presented to the students. A daily rhythm of kinesthetic exercises throughout the eight grades fosters the neurological development of the child. In addition, this educational approach nurtures the imagination in the early years, gradually building a firm creative and values-based foundation for the more abstract thinking required of the student in the middle grades. Blue Oak Charter School continues to provide a choice for parents in the Chico community who seek an education for their children that honors and nurtures the rhythms and capacities of natural child development.

  • Fabulous school. Waldorf inspired, developmentally appropriate, active kinesthetic learning, music and language programs at all grade levels, arts incorportated into all aspects of the curriculum. School community is absolutely wonderfull!

  • My son has thrived at Blue Oak Charter School for 5 years. The attention and care that every child receives, the emphasis on music , joyful reading, and applied math has created a learning experience that has been fun and enriching for my child (and his parents!). Imagine a school where music and art are taught every day, where every child learns both Spanish and Japanese, where every child learns to play the flute (K-8) and violin (3rd-8th grades), where every child learns movement to enrich their physical and educational aptitude and where each class is like a family. I would recommend this school to anyone who wants to see their child learn and grow in a joyful, caring atmosphere.

  • I absolutely love this school and so do my two kids. The teachers and curriculum are phenomenal -- You really won't find a more dedicated faculty anywhere else. The parent council has been really re-energized this year and there are lots of organized ways for parents to get involved. Like all schools these days, there are major funding obstacles but they have an active fundraising committee and find creative ways to get the most out off what they spend. The school has almost doubled in size this past year as well as moved into a new location so they are definitely going through some growing pains but they are handling it very very well and I can see it will be a strong school community because of it. I can't imagine sending my kids anywhere else.

  • The earlier review submitted in October 2009 reminds me that timing is everything. Reviews need context: the school moved in the summer of 2009 to a new much larger site (< 1acre to 6.25 acres); it had to open one week late because the builder was not ready; the move allowed the school to grow from 175 to 300 students; and therefore the faculty grew from 7 full time and 3 specialty teachers to 15 full time and 8 specialty teachers (not even counting aides). Considering all those hires during summer only one turned out to be sub-optimal and was replaced in December. So, yes only a month into school and October 2009 looked chaotic. Now it is what is always had been at its old site, the sweetest school with creative children, innovative staff, a functional administration and a very enthusiastic and hard working parent council. As a parent, I love the tenants of Waldorf education. I suggest any parent with a K-8th child, check out the school tours for evidence and ask questions!

  • This school has many problems in administration and parent council. There are also safety concerns and qualifications of some of the staff that are questionable. It is not the school you think it is. Waldorf methods are not accurately exercised and there are many funding problems.
