  • Woodlan is a great school, though it is often highly underrated by those that are ignorant of the achievements and overall respectability this school holds within it's walls. Though it is a smaller school, Woodlan still manages to be competitive in Band, Show Choir, and FFA. Woodlan's student body has also been recognized by a number of substitutes, teachers, janitors, and other staff as one of the most overall respectable and mature; so whoever wants to bad mouth this particular establishment better have some stronger evidence than that of second or third hand accounts of a situation they know nothing about. I ask of everyone to just not judge by what you have not even seen or been a part of, I plead with you to keep an open mind and just visit and talk with some of the awe-inspiring staff and sucessful students of Woodlan Jr./Sr. High School. Thank You All

  • Way to go-- putting your school on the map as an institution of higher intolerance. I just read the CNN article about the disciplinary action against teacher Amy Sorrell. What a contradiction you present to students as you teach them about the US Constitution's guarantees of free speech, then promptly reassign a teacher to another school because one of your students advocated tolerance to gays in the newspaper. Which of the school's administrators or the school board still buries his/her head in the sand? Did you think that perhaps you even have gays in your own student population? Students who thrive and accelerate academically just like the straights. Why can't this minority population be given support in the school newspaper through an article that advocates tolerance?
There is so much pressure on schools these days to do the right thing for students, and teaching tolerance sure seems like a step in the right direction to me. Or perhaps your goal is to wear the same crown of national public scorn that Larime, WY earned after the merciless homicide of Mathew Sheppard. What a great way to get your city noticed! You should be ashamed of yourselves for the humiliation you've caused your students by talking through both sides of your mouth. And three cheers for Amy Sorrell's having the guts to do what she knows is right.
    Signed,
    Steering Clear of Woodburn

  • Please be aware that this is the school that has punished a teacher for allowing an article advocating tolerance to be published. To quote Helen Keller, "The highest result of education is tolerance."
