(5 / 5) Flag as inappropriate - I attended #38 school beginning in 1953 shortly after it opened in a location that had been a horticulture nursery. A major addition was added around 1958 which removed much of the open space for which the the school was known for at that time. All of the graduates went on to high school and many are physicians, lawyers, business people and teachers today. Obviously much has changed in 50+ years. The school was 100% white and largely jewish at that time. The first african american student arrived in 1960 shortly before my family moved away when my father was transferred to Holmdel NJ from New York.
I visit the area when I am in from California just to "check out" the old homestead. The neighborhood still looks the same although Jersey City State (formerly the State Normal School) now dominates the neighborhood.
