  • Having gone to Cleveland Schools my entire school career, I was happy for my kids to be able to attend the same school I did. Until middle school. They get good kids as sixth graders and by the time they reach eighth grade, they are so burned out and beat down that they don't want to have anything to do with school. I have two current middle school students, both of whom have had different issues. Most of the teachers are fine, it's the administration. They seem to make up rules as they go along regarding the so called "bullying policy", athletic eligibility, class work and planners for sixth graders. I also went to middle school at this very school and am sad to say, it has changed and not for the better. The principal (as mentioned in the first review) is the worst. He talks circles around the issue no matter how hard the parent tries to work with them on a resolution. The vice principal initially comes off as an advocate for the student and seems fair at first but when it comes right down to it, he's as spineless as they come and cares more about his paycheck than the students. The counselor leaves much to be desired as well. She can't keep her story straight and can't seem to decide which side of her face to talk out of. I also have a problem with the principal supervising family members on the staff. His niece is one of the teachers (actually one of the decent ones) and the secretary is mother to his previously mentioned niece. Get some new people in the office and this school would dramatically improve in a heartbeat. I suggest not sending your child to CMS if at all possible.

  • The leadership (a word used loosely) is pathetic at Cleveland Middle School. The principal likes to talk around issues rather than actually dealing with problems.
Cleveland will never have a decent athletic department because coaches are too busy making sure their favorites play rather than playing students with talent.
If they would boot some of the "home grown” teachers (not all of them – just the ones who feel that growing up in Cleveland somehow makes them and their children a bit better than others) and the principal would grow a backbone it might be a decent school.
There are some wonderful teachers that sadly are overshadowed by the stinkers.

  • This school was great at first .. until they started discrimanating against not only me but several more. I had went on a vacation the second week of school ( not my decision ,, the parents) So i had missed 6 days , came back and got swine flu. I had been looking forward to being a freshman cheerleader , that all changed when they told me i couldn't tryout because i had to many abbsences , yes i had doctors notes and apparently it doesn't matter because doctors no longer count ? But heres the catch , they had made exceptions in many others students so they could try out. Girls told me themselves that they did. I have a 3.6 gpa and i have all a's and b's and my only problem was the attendence. There are girls who have vandelised cars , stole , have been suspended and still got to try out. I have seemed to got better by telling myself that im a good person and a good cheerleader and i always have next year . All i really am trying to get out there is that why only make exceptions for certain girls but not all ? It does suck not being able to play the sport that i love doing. Cleveland middle school is unfair. There are some amazing teachers in this school , then you come down to those who yell about everything . I really have liked the school until this year. Im sorry for the next new kid in school , be prepared.
